Add Multi-Factor Authentication To Your Password Manager

Add multi-factor authentication to a password manager so a shared team login stays accessible: paste the secret key in LastPass or scan the QR code in 1Password.

Overview

  • Store a shared login's MFA code in your password manager so the whole team can get the code

  • Two ways to set it up: paste the secret key (LastPass), or scan the QR code (1Password)

Add the secret key in LastPass

Use this when a team shares one login and you want everyone to be able to pull the MFA code.

  1. Log in to the account in Xakia as normal. In Connect, go to Configure MFA.

  2. On the Setup Authenticator App screen, copy the secret key shown as text above the QR code. You can ignore the QR code, and don't worry about spaces or capitalization.

  3. In LastPass, open the entry, go to the Two-Factor Authentication section, paste the key into the Secret Key field, and choose Activate.

  4. LastPass starts showing a six-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. Type the current code into the Xakia MFA screen to finish.

  5. Save the LastPass entry. From now on, anyone on the team gets the login code from LastPass.

For more detail, see LastPass's own guide here to creating a TOTP for password items.

Scan the QR code in 1Password

If you use 1Password, there's an even easier way. You scan the QR code instead of copying the key.

  1. Log in to the account in Xakia as normal. In Connect, go to Configure MFA. Leave the Setup Authenticator App screen open so the QR code is showing.

  2. In 1Password, open the Login Item, then choose Add More › One-Time Password. Click the Scan icon on the far right and scan the QR code on the Xakia screen.

  3. 1Password starts showing a six-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. Type the current code into the Xakia MFA screen to finish, then save the item.

  4. From now on, anyone on the team gets the login code from 1Password.
